My mother had an unfortunate accident and broke her nose.

It happened in the U.S. Here's a sampling of what the hospital charged her:

    One Tylenol: $14.00

    Four stitches @ $69.70 each: $278.80

    One piece of gauze: $4.50
All prices are in US dollars.

So far her bill is $2,500 US. And she hasn't received the bill for paramedic services yet.

God bless the Canadian health care system.

Ouch. After a couple hours of squash, and not even the hardest I'd played that day, I lunged for a drop shot and strained my adductor magnus. See Figure 1. After much icing (not the cake kind, although maybe that would help), I managed to hobble to the clinic. I waited for 2.5 hours to be seen. The G.P. assured me that the pop I heard when it happened was not from my body. Just a scary coincidence. It sounded like someone snapping their gum, very loud, right next to my ear. No ligament damage though.

Had my first experience today with both ultrasound and electrical impulse therapy. The physio was not impressed by my overall level of leg flexibility. Maybe it's time to continue my short-lived yoga sessions... but damn it, it's just not as much fun as whacking a little ball around.

Noticed a Blog called Amplified to Rock in Blogger's "recently updated" list!

Anyone who names their Blog after a Guided By Voices song is alright with me.

Cheers, Nanette!

Downloaded Apple's new music player, iTunes, last night. Very cool! Scanned and indexed all the MP3s on my hard drive in no time at all. Gives me links to tons of streaming sites that I actually want to listen to. Nice interface.

And yes, I was on the verge of buying Audion 2, when iTunes came along. I sure hope this doesn't cut into Panic's profits too much. They're a cool company.

So I guess all the new apps with that "OS X look" have no title bar, and can't be minimized like apps of old. But at least it shrinks down nice and small...

If BBEdit vernacular made it to the mainstream...

Rob says the person I'm looking for is a secretary.

I still think it's something more than that, like maybe an advisor. But maybe it's just because I've never had a secretary.

Hm. A secretary. Maybe he's right.

Some people have personal trainers to help them get fit. I need a personal organizer to help me get my workload under control. Not software. Not a daytimer. A real live person who will stand over me and say, "Come on, three more! It's all you!" Who'll say "OK, time for a break. Go have some soy milk and a sandwich." Actually, this person could be my agent, too, fending off unworthy projects. "Sorry, Jon's not interested. I'll just tell you up front. I mean sure, we could ask him, but he'd just listen politely, make some comments that might make you think he's interested, but the truth is he doesn't have the bandwidth. It's my job to keep him focused. So the answer is no. We'll be in touch."

I wonder if my company would allow me to personally subcontract such an employee. I'll ask them.

Milestones.

Rupa, my friend of 20 years, became a father on Saturday. In the space of 14 months, he met the woman of his dreams, got married, changed jobs, moved from Canada to California, and had a baby. I spoke to him on the phone tonight and he was happier than I'd ever heard him. Every word was filled with optimism and energy.

Also on Saturday, my friend Doug celebrated his 40th birthday. I grew up with his family; his brother Jeff and I are the closest of friends. Doug's fiancee arranged a surprise party for about 50 of his friends and relatives. They're the most well-adjusted family I know, even though they've gone through more than their share of troubles. Humour. That's the key.

I'm getting older. Now is the time for me to start doing, living, acting, everything. I've been sleeping fitfully the last few nights wondering when my next milestone will be. But rather than fearing it, I'm looking forward to it.
