Mary Hansen of Stereolab, one of my favorite bands, has died. I'll miss her sublime harmonies.

Daisy Chain

  • Happiness is a parody of the self-help book publishing industry. It has a daisy on the cover, echoing the daisy-stickered self-help book at the novel's heart.

  • The author of Happiness, Will Ferguson, maintains that despite their ostensible transcendence, self-help authors are the most screwed-up people he has ever met.

  • Anne works in customer service at Veer. Occasionally she deals with angry or disgruntled customers. The angriest of these customers lives in New York. She threatened to ruin our company if she did not get satisfaction, for she is a bestselling author, she is an influential designer, she is a cultural celebrity (as she sharply informed Anne) and her tale of our ineptitude would spread like a virus.

  • It was Anne's birthday last week. Our co-worker, Tammy, bought her a book. She had been attracted to its colorful cover, nice photography and layout, and lighthearted tone. Anne briefly flipped through its pages. She liked it too.

  • I had wandered into Anne's office, as is my wont, and picked up the book. Idly, I spoke aloud the title and the author's name.

  • "Oh. My. God," said Anne, quickly keying and gaping at her spreadsheet. "That book is by our worst customer!"
The book has a daisy on the cover.
